Clicker training is based on the foundational principle ofclassical conditioning, famously discovered byIvan Pavlov in the 1890s. Pavlov observed that dogs would begin salivating when they heard a bell—before food was even presented. Why? Because they had learned to associate thesound of the bell with thereward of food.
Modern dog trainers use this same principle—substituting a bell with a distinct, consistent click. With timing and repetition, your dog learns that the click = “Well done!”—followed by a reward like a treat or toy.
Charge the Clicker
Start by clicking and immediately giving your dog a treat. Repeat 5–10 times so they understand theclick = reward.
Introduce a Simple Cue
Ask your dog tosit. The moment they do,click and reward. Don’t say “good dog”—the click replaces your voice as a precise marker.
Be Consistent
Only click once per correct behavior. Keep sessions short and positive—5 to 10 minutes max.
Add Verbal Cues
Once your dog understands the behaviour, pair the action with a word (e.g. “Sit” or “Shake”).
Phase Out the Clicker
Eventually, your dog will associate the word or hand signal with the reward, and you can phase the clicker out gradually.
