Have you ever wondered whether those short little Dachshund legs can actually swim? Technically: YES Practically: NO!! The whole long-body-short-legs conundrum means Dachshunds are definitely not “natural” swimmers” but they can definitely learn.
Historically, the Dachshunds were bred to be hunters or burrowers so unlike their long-legged furry friends, they are definitely less naturally inclined to pop in for a little dip. Never fear though, you can definitely help your little sausage learn some swimming skills and if all else fails a doggie life jacket goes a long way.
The most important thing to remember is that those little legs get tired really quickly, so leaving your dachshund alone near any body of water is a real no-no as when they tire drowning is a very real possibility.
In fact, due to their proclivity to back-related injuries owing to their long body length, Dachshunds joints can really benefit from the weightless exercise of swimming so it’s a great activity to encourage your Hound to safely participate in.
If you want your Dachshund to be comfortable and confident in the water follow our step-by-step guide:
1. START YOUNG
Of course the best way to make your Dachshund comfortable in the water is to start when they are young. Desensitisation is the best way to train any dog and training your Dachshund to swim is no exception. Dachshunds are notoriously difficult to train as adults at the best of times so this early intervention strategy is your best bet.
2. GET IN WITH YOUR DOG
Getting in and participating in any scary activity is the best way to make your Dachshund feel at ease. Safety in numbers. If your Dachshund sees you are comfortable and at ease this will help them feel reassured.
3. GET A DOGGIE LIFE JACKET
Always make sure you get the right life-jacket for your Hound’s long body and that the jacket fits snuggly to your little sausage. This means the jacket must be tight enough so they cannot wriggle out of it whilst swimming.
A life jacket with adjustable straps is the gold standard and one with a handle on the top for easy access is also a must.
4. TREAT SWIMMING TRAINING LIKE ALL OTHER DOG TRAINING
Reward Reward Reward!! Like with all other training you do with your Hound, teaching your Dachshund to swim should be based on a reward system.
